Strategic Planning Q & A

Why is another general survey being done?

The annual member survey completed in September 2016 repeated questions from the previous study so that a year-to-year comparison could be made. We will continue this type of annual tracking study. The strategic planning study is designed to provide additional information needed for the Strategic Plan, specifically insights on the member experience and structure and systems to support our growing membership and your interests and expectations going forward.

Why did I get more than one survey?

You received additional survey(s) if you are a Course Coordinator and/or a Committee or Board Member.
The questions in these are different than the general membership survey so please also complete the general member survey you received.

Why are there also Leadership and Course Coordinators surveys?

As a volunteer organization, it is important that we hear directly from those members who have chosen to serve as Board or Committee members or as Course Coordinators about their specific volunteer participation and roles.

What is the next step after the surveys are completed?

After the surveys are completed and compiled, we will conduct two(2)  two-hour focus groups as well as a two (2) half-day facilitated planning sessions. Following these sessions we will review action planning results and make a final determination on strategies, goals, timeline, resource commitments etc. and prepare a written plan.

Will there other opportunities for member input?

Yes, one of the Action Planning Sessions will include active members.

When will the strategic plan be completed and how will be shared?

The goal is to have planning completed by May so it can be shared initial thoughts at the Annual Meeting in May.  An executive summary will be mailed to all members and also posted on the website.

Who is Russell Consulting and what is their role?

You can learn more about the organization and the principals, Jeff and Linda Russell, by going to their website: We worked with the Russells successfully on the previous strategic plan. Their role is to help us develop the best planning process and to conduct the agreed upon tasks such as surveys, focus groups and facilitated action planning sessions.

Who is overseeing the strategic planning?

There is a Strategic Planning  Committee that is comprised of the Executive Committee (Scott Kolar, president; Frank Power, past president; Janet Cabot, vice president; Tim Otis, treasurer and Sybil Better, secretary), the PLATO Administrator (Louise Fowler) and past Board president and member (Mary Boyd.)
