semester we discuss a novel, selected poetry, and a drama. The novel
will be the American classic, Ernest Hemingway’s masterpiece, A
Farewell to Arms. Poetry will be member-selected from Jorie
Graham’s chronologically organized anthology Earth Took of
Earth, the title taken from the first line of the earliest known
English poem (2nd Century). For drama, we will read Arthur
Miller’s A View From the Bridge*, described as marking the birth
of modern English drama and as the best play of its decade..
*The play title was erroneously listed as Look Back in Anger in earlier editions of Spring 2016 course information.
