The Sandbox in Autumn

       by Barbara Carson

The plastic turtle sandbox squats
Among its nest of russet leaves.
It is as vivid as an emerald set in gold
Or a young man’s Irish eyes.
It stares accusingly, like the eyes of a mother
Who has caught her child in a lie
Or a lover who feels he has been betrayed.
I should have, long before first frost
Emptied the sand and sold or given away
The outgrown shell
For the children are older now
And not inclined to play in sand.
Yet, there it stands, more albatross than keepsake
Like the ring from a broken engagement.
It is a thing out of season
Like thoughts of an old love
That appear on the back porch.
