This summer we’ll investigate three members of the “hard Boiled” school of American detective fiction: Sam Spade (Dashiell Hammett), Philip Marlowe (Raymond Chandler), and Lew Archer (Ross MacDonald).  READ Dashiell Hammett’s “THE MALTESE FALCON” prior to the first class. We’ll watch a movie based on the story in class followed by a discussion of the case and the investigator’s methods.  The reading for the second week is Raymond Chandler’s “THE BIG SLEEP” and the third week, Ross MacDonald’s “THE MOVING TARGET.” There will be a movie and discussion each week.
