Course Description

This semester Continuing Philosophy participants will be reading and discussing The Dream of Enlightenment: The Rise of Modern Philosophy (Liveright, 2017) by Anthony Gottlieb. In his acclaimed book Gottlieb navigates the great explosion of thought we have come to label the Enlightenment, taking us to northern Europe in the wake of religious wars and the rise of science.

In hardly an historical blink of an eye, Descartes, Hobbes, Spinoza, Locke, Leibniz and Hume made their mark on western history and thought. These seminal thinkers continue to provide grist for discussion and reflection—as they will do for us in this long-running class.
