Course Description

This “come back” semester, we will discuss 2 short novels dealing with the “American Dream”; The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald (1925) and A Lost Lady by Willa Cather (1923).  We will also discuss poems selected by class members from The Sea Shell Anthology, Christopher Burns, ed.

Our last segment will be devoted to Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, a timely work depicting not only the consequences of political conflict, but also the struggle between conflicting demands of honor, patriotism, and friendship.

Please read Part A of Lost Lady for our first session, Monday, September 20. The recommended editions are: Gatsby – ISBN 0-684-71760-3, Scribner Classic/Collier paperback and A Lost Lady, ISBN 0-679-72887-2, Vintage Classics paperback.
