Course Description

We consider violence throughout history with an emphasis on Judeo-Christian traditions.
Some of the topics we cover: violence-of-God- traditions, human and child sacrifice, witch hunts, torture, burning people alive, massacres, “othering”, pedophilia, anti-Semitism, misogyny, the Inquisition, etc.

We view a number of DVD lectures by Prof. Jason Bivins, who explains the causes of religious violence and the ways to cure this problem. Other professors discuss human sacrifice among the New World natives and religious warfare in history. We also read excerpts from authors Helen Ellerbe, Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer and others.

Join us for a stimulating discussion.
