Course Description

We will devote this Semester to reading two works by Saul Bellow.

We will begin by reading Herzog (ISBN # 9780142437292), and then we’ll read Humboldt’s Gift (ISBN # 9780143105473).

"People don't realize how much they are in the grip of ideas", Bellow once wrote. "We live among ideas much more than we live in nature.” Herzog is such a person. In fact, he considers his addiction to ideas to be his greatest virtue. (Wikipedia). Humboldt’s Gift explores the changing relationship of art and power in a materialist America. (Wikipedia)
