COVID-19 Precautions:

The fall lectures for PLATO Madison’s 2021-22 season will be held virtually due to on-going concerns over the COVID-19 variants.

Description:

In the first lecture, taking place on the first full day of fall, we’ll learn more about extreme weather and the basic elements and evidence of global climate change. You’ll also have an opportunity to ask about recent weather phenomena, severe storms, this summer’s heat, drought, and your other weather and climate questions.

Speaker bio:

Speaker: Jonathan Martin is Professor (and former Chair) in the UW-Madison Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences. He is one of the two “Weather Guys” heard monthly on Wisconsin Public Radio and one of the writers of the “Ask the Weather Guys” column in the Wisconsin State Journal.

Professor Martin’s research expertise is in mid-latitude weather systems.  Over his career he has authored more than 70 scientific papers, as well as the leading textbook on mid-latitude atmospheric dynamics. He is also the author of the new book “Reginald Sutcliffe and the Invention of Modern Weather Systems Science.”  Professor Martin has received numerous accolades for excellence in teaching and the Princeton Review ranked him among the Best 300 Professors in the nation.
