Before there was Governor Nelson State Park, the land supported agriculture and summer vacations. On Wednesday, February 8, 2023 join Don Sanford, author of On Fourth Lake: A Social History of Lake Mendota, currently in its second printing, for a trip back to a time when cows grazed the fields along Highway M and kids sang around the campfires on the shore of Lake Mendota.
Don, a Madisonian, Lake Mendota sailor, and iceboater, spent more than a decade collecting the stories of the people, places, and events that make Lake Mendota a special place in the hearts of Madisonians past and present.
Don joined the staff of Wisconsin Public Television in 1976 serving as lighting director, production manager, volunteer manager, and occasional on-air host. He earned a B.S. in communications studies from SUNY Oswego and an M.S. in radio, television, and film from Syracuse University. Since 2007, he’s hosted his popular Lake Mendota Celebrity tour for the Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR) pontoon boat program.
After the lecture, books will be available for purchase.
Parking: Capitol Lakes Retirement Community, 333 W. Main St.
There is free parking in the ramp across the street. Take & keep the parking ramp entry ticket with you. Drive up to the S (SKY) Level. Park only in stalls labeled Capitol Lakes (with Dome logo). Walk up the stairs to Elevator Access Room. Take elevator down from S Level => E Level (Main St. Access Exit). Cross street and enter the main doors. The talk is in the auditorium on the first floor. When you return, take your parking ramp ticket to the Capitol Lakes receptionist to scan it paid, for use when you exit at the parking ramp gate.

COVID Protocol for Capitol Lakes
At this time, the only COVID requirement is that everyone entering the building must make an entry in and sign the registration book located at the front desk. This requirement would apply to PLATO members taking a course, attending an in person lecture or using their lobby or bathrooms as they wait for a bus. Wear masks if desired.
