The Lecture and Discussion of this Year's Big Read:

On November 15, 1-3 pm PLATO is proud to sponsor a Zoom presentation of Smith's live Go Big Read lecture.  This will be a virtual event.  We will spend the first hour+ watching his November 1 talk, followed by an on-line discussion of the many issues raised in his talk and the book.

About The Book:

UW Madison has chosen Clint Smith's book:  "How the Word is Passed:  A reckoning with the History of Slavery Across America:"  their Big Read initiative for 2022.  We think you will find this presentation both interesting and challenging.  You don’t have to have read his book to appreciate his perspectives, but it helps.

About Clint Smith:

Clint Smith is a staff writer at The Atlantic. He is the author of the narrative nonfiction book, How the Word Is Passed: A Reckoning With the History of Slavery Across America, which was a #1 New York Times Bestseller, as well as the poetry collection Counting Descent, which won the 2017 Literary Award for Best Poetry Book from the Black Caucus of the American Library Association.  He was also a finalist for an NAACP Image Award.

PLATO is proudly supported in part by Oakwood Village.

PLATO is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in association with:
