Tour of the Wisconsin Veterans Museum

The Wisconsin Veterans Museum is dedicated to telling the stories of the veterans of Wisconsin who served in the United States armed forces. A docent, and military veteran, will guide us through the exhibits and dioramas illustrating how Wisconsinites – both men and women – participated in American history from the Civil War through the conflicts of the 20th and 21st centuries. Exhibits include many personal and military artifacts and a “Huey” helicopter that flew during Vietnam. You can hear, in their own words, veterans recount everyday military life as well as their part in historic moments. This museum has won awards from the American Alliance of Museums and is affiliated with the Smithsonian.

Please meet in the lobby of the museum about 10 minutes before the tour starts to meet our tour guide.

Juliette Sterkens, AuD is a professional audiologist who has shared her knowledge of hearing loss with organizations across the upper Midwest. In her lecture she will highlight the advances in hearing technology, hearing rehabilitation, and assistive listening. She will also share answers to commonly asked questions about hearing loss and rehabilitation, as well as answering questions directly from the audience.

Dr. Sterkens has more than four decades of experience in audiology, hearing rehabilitation, and assistive listening. Since 2012, she’s been on an encore career as a consumer and assistive-listening consultant with the Hearing Loss Association of America, thanks to special grant funding. She has received several awards for her work, including the American Academy of Audiology Presidential Award and the Wisconsin Audiologist of the Year Award. She lives in Oshkosh, WI and serves on the board of HEAR-in-the-Fox Cities, a nonprofit that helps pay for hearing aids for children in Northeast Wisconsin. Locally, she has worked with members of the Madison chapter of Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA).

PLATO is pleased to introduce a new special event for members only: Noon Zooms! These virtual conversations with newsmakers and other guest experts will be produced monthly based on current events. They will be scheduled during a noon hour on different days. Watch for upcoming Noon Zooms in the Tuesday Weekly Update.

Unlike a lecture, Noon Zooms will be conversations between a host and a speaker on a timely issue in the news and there will be more time for questions and comments from attendees.

Our pilot Noon Zoom will feature retired Wisconsin Public Radio talk show host Joy Cardin talking with former state legislator and Sierra Club vice president Spencer Black about how we can individually and collectively make a difference on environmental issues during this era of deregulation and climate change denial on the federal level. How do environmentalists take back their power? What are you doing?

The theme of Earth Day 2026 is Our Power, Our Planet and we are encouraged to take action in our communities to support renewable energy policies and a cleaner, more sustainable planet.

Spencer Black represented the 77th Assembly District for 26 years in the State Legislature. He served as the Assembly Chair of the Natural Resources Committee and was the Assembly Minority Leader. During his tenure, Black was considered to be the Legislature’s leading environmental advocate. Representative Black authored numerous environmental laws including the Stewardship Fund, the largest conservation effort in Wisconsin’s history, the Mining Moratorium Bill, the Lower Wisconsin Riverway, the statewide recycling program, and the endangered species match grant. Black also served as the Vice President of the national Sierra Club, the nation’s largest environmental organization. In addition, he was an adjunct professor in UW-Madison’s Department of Planning and Landscape Architecture. He is also a columnist for The Capital Times newspaper.

Their products include binoculars, monoculars, scopes and related accessories.

Healthy Grown is a whole farm approach of growing potatoes and vegetables using the best environmental practices possible, from pesticide use to promotion of ecological standards on the farm. Dr. Deana Knuteson will present the history and requirements of the Healthy Grown program, its acceptance by Wisconsin farmers, and how the purchase of Healthy Grown vegetables benefits the consumer (You!) who buys and consumes them! These practices are keeping Wisconsin on the cutting edge of sustainability documentation.

The program has been operating under the overall vision/mission of: “Healthy Grown is to maintain ecological, sustainable and environmentally sound potato and vegetable production systems while enhancing value for growers with the ‘Good for you, good for the environment’ message.”

Deana Knuteson, Ph.D. is the educational program coordinator for the Wisconsin Healthy Grown® program and works extensively on large-scale sustainability initiatives. She is a member of the Department of Plant Pathology at UW-Madison. Deana received her Bachelor’s degree in Botany from the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point, and her Master’s degree and Ph.D. in entomology from the University of Wisconsin- Madison.

The Oakwood Nature Preserve is an 8 acre conservation park maintained by residents of the Oakwood community and the Oakwood horticulture staff. We will walk along the three-fourths of a mile wood- chipped Rustic Path among tall trees. The path goes beside Trillium Corner (a spring ephemeral garden), the prairie plots and a vernal pond and there are some short but steep slopes.

We will have a one-hour walk followed by a social hour with lemonade and cookies in the Oaks Community Room. There will be listening devices for all participants. Unfortunately, the trail is not accessible for people with disabilities. Bring water, sunglasses, a walking stick if you use one and dress for the weather. Sandals are not appropriate footwear. There are restroom facilities at the start and end.

Parking: Parking will not be in the usual spots for PLATO events at Oakwood since the nature preserve is on the west end of the campus. Do not enter the underground parking garages. After entering the Island Drive entrance turn immediately to the right. Park near The Oaks residence hall on the west end of campus (see map below). There is plenty of surface parking. Look for signs and somebody showing you where to park.

So much is new at the Rep! This is PLATO's first visit to the newly remodeled facilities. The new black-box theater, the Herro-Franke Studio offers a uniquely flexible space that brings you closer to the story—perfect for powerful, intimate productions and bold, unexpected performances. Whether it’s a moving drama or a fresh new work, this space invites you into a one-of-a-kind theatrical experience where no two visits feel the same.

The Herro-Franke Studio Theater is located on the Lobby level. New more comfortable seats, railings in the aisles, cupholders, new assisted listening devices, new concession bar and modernized restrooms are just some of the new features.

Tickets: Our group will be seated in row C (third row) on both sides of the center aisle. Seats will be assigned based on registration date.

Group Lunch is at The Public Market. We will save tables on the second-floor. Each person is responsible for ordering, paying for and carrying their own meal from one of the nine unique eateries in the Public Market to the second floor dining area. In addition to the nine eateries, there is a bakery, wine shop and bar, coffee shop, etc. An elevator and stairs access the second floor and restrooms near the seating area. Again, lunch is not included in your registration.

Our bus will also drop-off and pick-up at the Milwaukee Public Market for lunch alternatives. There are many nearby Third Ward restaurants from which to choose. Many restaurants have changed over time so please check to see if they will be open and we highly recommend that you make a reservation.

Join us in discovering some of the treasures, Dubuque, our neighbor to the southwest holds.

Our first stop will be the Iowa Welcome Center in downdown Dubuque where we will pick up our step-on guide.

We will then head to St. Luke's United Methodist church. This church is noted for its collection of over 100 Tiffany windows, the fifth largest collection of Tiffany stained glass in the world.

Then we will have a progressive lunch at three locations: Steeple Square, 7 Hills Event Center, and the Fanny Stout House. A progressive lunch is a social dining event where a group of people eat different parts of a meal at different locations, moving from place to place between courses. Our hop on guide will be sharing all things Dubuque throughout the lunch stops.

After lunch we will head to the Fenelon Place Elevator, a narrow-gauge funicular railway, locally known as the “World’s Shortest and Steepest Scenic Railway”.

Afterwards you will have time to shop in downdown Dubuque. The area blends 19th-century architecture (brick buildings, ornate facades) with newer restaurants, breweries, and shops.

And, as always, there will be a suprise stop.

Join us as we collaborate with the Madison Trust for Historic Preservation on a guided walking tour through the historic Mansion Hill East neighborhood. Travel through time to see the stately sandstone mansions built by Madison’s early elite, including the Old Governor’s Mansion, home to 17 Wisconsin governors. Other highlights include the “architectural gem of Mansion Hill,” now Mansion Hill Inn, and the Gates of Heaven Synagogue.

The tour will accommodate up to 18 pre-registered guests and will last approximately 75 minutes. Meet outside the Edgewater Hotel at the upper level restaurant entrance. The tour will begin promptly at 4 p.m.

The guided tour is approximately 1 mile in length and covers some paved but hilly terrain. Comfortable shoes for walking are strongly recommended. Tour participants are encouraged to bring water with them as the tour will be taking place entirely outdoors and shade will vary. Walking tours will happen rain or shine. In the case of inclement weather, consider bringing an umbrella. There are no restrooms on the tour.

Leading the tour will be PLATO Board member Steve Sparks. A certified Toastmaster, he holds a master's degree in journalism and mass communication. In retirement Steve is doing consulting work in communications and indulging his interest in history by working as a tour guide at the Wisconsin State Capitol and as a docent for the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Monona Terrace and for Historic Architecture Walking Tours through the Madison Trust for Historic Preservation.

Registration: Cost is $20/person with all the registration money donated to the Madison Trust for Historic Preservation.

The registration deadline is Thursday, May 28. PLATO refunds an event fee if cancelled prior to the registration deadline. Refunds after the registration deadline are only processed if a wait-listed registrant can attend.

A tour may be cancelled for extreme weather or lightening. We will alert guests at least four hours in advance by email. Purchased tickets will be refunded.

Parking: You can park on the street or in the Edgewater Hotel parking ramp which has a public parking rate of $4/hour.

- Safety vests will be provided and must be worn at all times during the tour.

- No sandals or open toed shoes.

- Bathroom access is extremely limited, please plan accordingly.

Weather: Tours proceed rain or shine, so tour attendees should dress for the weather.

Directions: Please meet at Hope Park (3656 County Highway AB, McFarland, WI) directly outside our landfill facility where our mobile Trash Lab exhibit is located. The Trash Lab exhibit will be parked out front, with a "tours" sign to mark where we will be gathering. Visitors will have a chance to explore the Lab prior to getting on our Waste + Renewables bus for the grounds tour.

Ten Chimneys is the estate lovingly created by Broadway legends Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne. Yes, there are ten chimneys! Lynn and Alfred named their Genesee Depot, Wisconsin, estate after the number of chimneys on the Main House, Cottage, and Studio combined. The elegant three-story Main House has six chimneys and eighteen rooms (including the: Entry Hall, Garden Room, Flirtation Room, Drawing Room, Library, Belasco Room, Dining Room, Kitchen, Helen Hayes Bedroom, Laurence Olivier Bedroom, Noël Coward Bedroom, Master Bedroom, Lynn’s Dressing Room, and Lynn’s Sewing Room). The Lunts’ quaint country Cottage has three chimneys and five main rooms (Living Room, Kitchen, Syrie Maugham Bedroom, Library, and Bugbee Bedroom). The one-room Swedish-style log cabin Studio has one chimney. The 60-acre estate, nestled in the rolling Kettle Moraine of southeast Wisconsin, also includes a charming pool and pool house, a creamery, a greenhouse, barns, stables, and other bucolic outbuildings.

Accessibility

A portion of the Main House and the entire Lunt-Fontanne Program Center are accessible by standard wheelchairs and walkers. Regretfully, the Main House is not equipped to handle motorized wheelchairs. Wheelchairs of any kind and rolling walkers cannot be used on the Full Estate Tour.

A surprise stop will end our day's event.
