Do news media lie, twist, and exaggerate? Do sources lie, spin, and conceal? Both the media and their sources might contribute to “fake news.” The course will consider the distinction between facts and truth, between news and opinion, between public relations and propaganda. We will examine the evolution of these and related concepts, particularly in the context of emerging digital media. Participants will seek out examples of fake (or genuine) news for discussion in class.
Students should bring to class laptops, i-pads, or cellphones in order to read e-mail messages and on-line media.
