The Future of Capitalism: Facing the New Anxieties

Coordinator

Name  Email Phone
Jack Mitchell Jwmitch1@wisc.edu 608-274-6903

Course Description

We will discuss the thoughts provoked by Paul Collier’s The Future of Capitalism: Facing the New Anxieties in four one-hour virtual sessions. While reading the book is recommended, we will summarize his proposals for a healthier capitalism and a healthier society before putting them up for discussion. The book is not so much about economics as about the problems capitalism has inadvertently caused and how we might address them. His answers are not necessarily practical, but they are, as Bill Gates says, “thought-provoking.”

Film History: The Early Fifties

Coordinator

Name  Email Phone
Jim O'Brien jimrobr@gmail.com 608-286-1946

Course Description

The versatile Guinness returns in contrasting roles; an unknown guy-next-door type escapes his powerful mother and wins the shy girl of his dreams; Ingmar Bergman returns with a moving study of old age triumphant; and the ageless Astaire puts the Beatnics in place without missing a step. Who else? Of course, the casualties of WW II haunt some of the characters, despite their efforts to put the war behind them. Musicals seem to offer some relief.
