Wilma Mankiller (November 18, 1945 – April 6, 2010) became the first female chief of the Cherokee Nation in 1985. Spearheading an array of health and education initiatives, she is credited with increasing tribal membership and revenues by nearly 200 percent during her 10 years in charge. She was also an author, helped establish the federal Office of Tribal Justice, and taught at Dartmouth College. Her lifelong commitment to activism was rewarded with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998. Learn more about Wilma Mankiller here.
