    SPECIAL EVENTS

    FIELD TRIP

    NEW! Tour of the Wisconsin State Capitol on Thursday, November 7 from 12:00-12:55pm. Join us for a free guided tour at the Wisconsin State Capitol. Learn about the purpose of the spaces, the architecture, the artwork, the stone, and the history of the building. Guided by PLATO Board member Steve Sparks, who is also a Capitol Tour Guide! Registration is required and members may bring a guest. Learn more and register here.

    NEXT WEEK! Madison Metropolitan Sewer District Treatment Plant Tour on Friday, October 11 from 1:00-2:15pm. MMSD's treatment plant handles about 40 million gallons a day! Learn how those 40 million gallons can be recycled into reusable water and nutrients for plants and soil in a 75-minute tour. The tour will encourage you to think about responsible water use, the products we use, and how everyday choices can help protect our water. Registration is required and members may bring a guest. Learn more and register here.

    LECTURE

    History & Stories of Wisconsin's One Room Schools on Tuesday, October 22 from 1:30-3:00pm at Oakwood Village University Woods Campus. A retired teacher and educator, Susan Apps-Bodilly, will take us back to the long-ago days when Wisconsin's rural children attended a one room school. During this interactive talk, Susan will also share about how she researched and gathered stories for the book. Registration is not required and parking is free. Members may bring a guest! Learn more here.

    BREAKFAST GATHERING 
    NEXT WEEK! Second Friday Breakfast – enjoy conversation, coffee and breakfast snacks with fellow members on Friday, October 11 from 9:30 - 11:30am at Lakeside Street Coffee House. Seating is on both the main floor and downstairs levels. You will need to climb a flight of steps in order to be seated on the downstairs level. Guests are welcome, so feel free to bring a friend who may be interested in PLATO! Learn more and RSVP here.

    DID YOU KNOW? for October 1 ­– 14, 2024 

    Elijah McCoy (May 2, 1844 – October 10, 1929) was born in Canada, to parents who had fled slavery. McCoy trained as an engineer in Scotland as a teenager. Unable to find an engineering position in the United States, he worked for a railroad and later invented a lubrication device to make railroad operations more efficient.

    The western hemisphere, the lands between the Atlantic and the Pacific, have been occupied and cultivated from coast to coast for millennia. Ned Blackhawk has documented the stories of these indigenous citizens in The Rediscovery of America: Native Peoples and the Unmaking of U.S. History. Blackhawk has produced a comprehensive history that carefully presents the facts of indigenous people living on the North American continent before contact with European settlers.

    FIELD TRIP

    There are only four spaces left for this fascinating Tour of Yerkes Observatoryon Monday, October 7, 2024. Often called "the birthplace of modern astrophysics", this 90-minute tour will touch on a range of topics including astrophysics, architecture, local history, photography, engineering, art and more. Afterward, enjoy two hours in Lake Geneva for lunch and to explore the downtown on your own. The registration deadline is September 22 and members may bring a guest. Learn more and register here.

    Warren M. Washington (b. 1936), 
    the second African-American to earn a doctorate in the atmospheric sciences, received the highest scientific honor bestowed by the U.S. President, the National Medal of Science, for his fundamental contributions to the understanding of Earth's coupled climate system through numerical simulation, leadership in U.S. science policy, and inspiring mentorship of young people of all backgrounds and origins.

    Choose from 34 courses: 20 in-person, 12 virtual and 2 hybrid options.

    Most fall courses will begin the week of September 16.

    FIELD TRIP

    Register today for this fascinating Tour of Yerkes Observatory on Monday, October 7, 2024.Often called "the birthplace of modern astrophysics", this 90-minute tour will touch on a range of topics including astrophysics, architecture, local history, photography, engineering, art and more. Afterward, enjoy two hours in Lake Geneva for lunch and to explore the downtown on your own. The registration deadline is September 22 and members may bring a guest. Learn more and register here.

    the second African-American to earn a doctorate in the atmospheric sciences, received the highest scientific honor bestowed by the U.S. President, the National Medal of Science, for his fundamental contributions to the understanding of Earth's coupled climate system through numerical simulation, leadership in U.S. science policy, and inspiring mentorship of young people of all backgrounds and origins.

     Madison Youth Arts Center (MYArts) Tour on Wednesday, August 7 from 2:00-3:15pm. Completed in 2021, the $29 million dollar, four-story building is home to Madison Youth Choirs, the Children’s Theater of Madison, and over 25 more arts and community groups. This tour is free to PLATO members and their guests. Registration is required and there are only a couple of spots left! Learn more and register here.

    Did you know that one of the local community programs that PLATO's Education Fund supports is Maydm? PLATO's annual donation supports Maydm's ability to host immersive after school programs and workshops designed to enhance the STEM skills of middle and high school students in Madison.

    Maydm equips students with the skills, confidence, and opportunities they need to succeed in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics making strides toward a more inclusive & innovative STEM field.
