Read and discuss two books examining the American Revolution, one focusing on the years before the war and the other on the post-war outcomes. We begin with Alfred Young’s The Shoemaker and the Tea Party: Memory and the American Revolution. Follow a poor shoemaker who was in the crowd at the Boston massacre and threw tea in the harbor in 1773. Joseph J. Ellis’s The Great Contradiction: The Tragic Side of the American Founding centers on missed opportunities at the end of the Revolution regarding slavery and Indian relations. Both authors reflect on how Americans have and possibly should remember the Revolution. Download the Syllabus.
