Madison Metropolitan Sewer District Treatment Plant Tour

MMSD's treatment plant handles about 40 million gallons a day and that number has not changed much in decades.   Learn how those 40 million gallons can be recycled into reusable water and nutrients for plants and soil in a 75-minute tour.  The tour will encourage you to think about responsible water use, the products we use, and how everyday choices can help protect our water.

Accessibility:  Most of the tour route is outdoors and includes a good deal of walking, including over grass and up and down stairs. 

Safety information: Please review the District’s safety expectations prior to the tour.   Closed-toe shoes are required for all attendees - no exceptions.  

Directions: The treatment plant is located at 1610 Moorland Road in Madison. However, online maps like Google Maps will not take you to the tour starting location, so use these directions to get to the starting point. The visitor entrance is on South Towne Drive (Gate 2 on this map). If you’re coming south from the Beltline, the plant will be on the right after you cross the railroad tracks and bike path. Stay on South Towne Drive past the first gate and take a right through Gate 2, which is brick and has an MMSD sign. Call the front desk at 608-222-1201 if you have any issues getting into the plant.
