About the event

War reporting has a long history. But in the 21st century, war correspondents are facing economic, technological, and political challenges that make their work more dangerous. Join this discussion in which the speaker will present research drawing upon more than 100 interviews with reporters and news editors, arguing that the international news industry needs to take better care of its journalists.

About the speaker

Lindsay Palmer, assistant professor, UW–Madison’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication

Palmer studies global media from a qualitative perspective, especially focusing on the cultural labor of conflict correspondents in the digital age. She is particularly interested in the economic and political structures that inform news organizations’ policies on their correspondents’ safety in the field, and she recently published a book on this topic — Becoming the Story: War Correspondents since 9/11. She also is interested in the local news employees who assist the foreign reporters who are visiting their nations, and she is working on a book related to this topic.
