Hoyt and Quarry Parks

The Walk

We will meet at the parking lot in Hoyt Park (see directions, below) and be introduced to our leader for the morning, Tim Kessenich, A member of the Friends of Hoyt Park.  We will concentrate our time in Hoyt Park, being introduced to the city overlooks, the original quarry, and the natural habitat including a long standing prairie and an Oak Savanna. We will follow along the stairs and paths built by the WCC.  Tim will introduce us to the hills of Quarry  Park with a few stories and a short walk. The walk may be the shortest in this series but we'll hear the importance of the quarries and the parks in this park of Madison.  The walk will be about 2+ miles long and will take about 2 hours.  

The paths in Quarry Park are hilly and not suitable for long walks nor to those needing assistance walking.  There is also a stone stairs in Hoyt Park created by the WCC that we will descend.   Following the walk we will meet at for lunch at Cafe Hollander..

Hoyt Park

Quiet, and slightly removed from the congested thoroughfare of Madison traffic, Hoyt Park is an ideal location for either a substantial, social gathering or a peaceful stroll through forest and prairie habitat. Truly, there is something for everyone to value. The naturalist will enjoy the lush mix of young, and old growth vegetation that is laced by a network of paved and unpaved hiking trails. The sports enthusiast will find a full-sized basketball court, a softball field, and a grassy, clearing suitable for soccer, football, or Frisbee. In addition, the two highly, hospitable shelters will appease the socialites and the play equipment will occupy the children. While at the same time, the past comes alive thanks in large part to not only the many restored historic fireplaces (twelve precisely) scattered like ancient treasure throughout, but also the restored prairie, rock and tree formations which envelop the park. These are, perhaps, a few reasons why Madison natives make a point of returning to Hoyt Park, again and again.

Quarry Park

Quarry Park offers designated trails for multi-use, biking only and pedestrian only.  The 17 acre park has multiple well maintained walking and biking paths. 


Driving and Parking Directions

We will meet at the Hoyt Park parking lot at 3902 Regent St.  

From the east: Take Regent St straight west past West High (on the right), past Resurrection Cemetery (on the left), and past old Hoyt school (on the right).  Hoyt School is now Madison Community Recreation.   Continue past the Hoyt Park sign (on the right) and take the first right into the Hoyt parking lot.


From the west: I would take Midvale Blvd to Hillcrest Dr. east.  Go about six blocks and turn left (north) on to Owen Pkwy.  Drive past the small overlook parking (on the left) and take the next left into the Hoyt parking lot.
