Nina Simone:  Four Women

Milwaukee Rep Quadracci Powerhouse Theater
Sunday, May 5, 2024     2 pm Matinee

Fiery Anthems from "The High Priestess of Soul"

The creator of some of our nation’s most powerful Civil Rights anthems, Nina Simone shook the world with her music.  After the 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Simone's tribute song "Four Women" transformed her from gifted pianist to trailblazing activist, charting a new course as an agent of change and healing. This play with music shines a light on how she found her true calling and gave voice to a movement through impactful and inspirational songs like "Everything Must Change," "To Be Young, Gifted and Black" and “His Eye is on the Sparrow."

Born in 1933 in North Carolina, Ms. Simone became a singer, songwriter, piano prodigy, composer, arranger and civil right activist.  Her music spans styles including classic, folk, gospel, blues, jazz, R&B, and pop having attended Julliard School of Music in New York.  She changed her name to "Nina Simone" to disguise herself from family members, having chosen to play "the devil's music" or so-called "cocktail piano" in the beginning of her music career.

In 1964, Nina Simone came out with her first album to include a song that addressed US racial inequality (triggered by the 1963 church bombing in Birmingham).  Civil Rights messages became the norm in her recordings and concerts.  She aligned more with her neighbor Malcolm X than with Martin Luther King.   As her activism rose, her release of new music slowed.

The four-time Grammy award nominee recorded more than 40 albums between 1958 and 1974 and was inducted into Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.  In 2023, Rolling Stone ranked Simone at No. 21 on their list of the Top 200 Greatest Singers of All Time.

"Entertaining, enlightening, and educational... a stirring portrait of a tortured artist yearning to have her voice heard.” – BroadwayWorld
